A disciple, in general, is an adherent or a follower.  The Merriam-Webster Dictionary says a disciple is “one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another.” More specifically, a disciple of Jesus Christ is one who obeys the teaching of Jesus and helps to spread that teaching to others.

Discipleship at its core is growing as a disciple of Christ. Through prayer and purposeful study of the Bible, we are able to love God and keep his commandments. Therefore, discipleship describes the ongoing, lifelong process of becoming more like Jesus.

Disciple-making is an intentional process of evangelizing non-believers and establishing believers in the

faith. Discipling is the responsibility of disciples of Jesus to help others grow as disciples of Him.

In view of Jesus' Great Commission, we are not only informed of the “Who”, but also given the details of the “What” of discipleship.  Since Jesus has been given “all authority in heaven and on earth” we who submit to that authority have been given the command to “go make disciples.”  We are instructed by Him to make disciples by “baptizing them…” and by “teaching them…” This statement of Jesus lays out the parameters of discipleship to which we submit.
